Title: Multi and Inter-Cultural Christianity
Scripture: Acts 10:44-48 John 15:9-17
John 14 to 17 covers Jesus’ farewell speeches and prayer; in interpretation of Jesus’
completed work on earth and relation to both believers and the world after his resurrection
and ascension. Chapter 15 of John tells the pattern of the Christian believer’s life: the
believer’s relation to Christ -abide and the relation of believers to one another-love.
These speeches immediately follow the act of washing the disciples’ feet on the night of
Jesus’ arrest.
In contrast to the description of their relationship in the former image of “servants and
master”(John 13:16), Jesus refers to the disciples as “friends.” He has shared everything
that he knows with them.
A publication once offered a prize for the best definition of a friend. Among the thousands of
answers received were the following:
“One who multiplies joys, divides grief, and whose honesty is inviolable.”
“One who understands our silence.”
“A volume of sympathy bound in cloth.”
“A watch that beats true for all time and never runs down.”
The winning definition read:
“A friend is the one who comes in when the whole world has gone out.”(Bits and Pieces,
July, 1991)
Disciples, as the branches, are connected to or abiding in the central vine, Jesus.
The fruit that the disciples are called to bear -love -is demonstrated in the foot-washing(13:5)
As we love each other we experience the love of Jesus for us- a love as full as the love of
God for Jesus. Jesus is present with us as a friend and invites us to work together to share
God’s love. He is encouraging us to carry the work of discipleship.
We find Peter in Caesarea in the home of the Roman centurion, Cornelius. Peter grasps
The radical notion that God’s action moves beyond human barriers If any have received the
Spirit, then they are already members of the emerging church and should be baptized..
We may appropriately refer to these verses as the Gentile Pentecost. Through the Holy
Spirit the life, death, and the resurrection of Christ are mediated to foreigners. A new day

dawns as Gentiles under the protection of the Holy Spirit break out in tongues and lift their
voices in praise to God.
We engage Jesus’ hopes and instructions for the community of followers. As these followers
banded together, the church emerged. Following their lead, we continue to look to Jesus as
our friend who sets the rhythm of discipleship and invites us to respond creatively and
fruitfully.
To be called “friend” by Jesus marks a different kind of relationship with God. This kind of
deep friendship commands a personal response:
-listening,
-approaching-boldly, bravely, and wisely.
-sharing the good news and
-going together as partners for ministry.
In our UCC we build friendships and relationships with people from different cultures and
ethnic backgrounds through various ministries.
Let’s try to practise: praise, forgiveness, patience, gratitude, and appreciation
Let’s live with: creativity, enthusiasm, caring, proactive mind, and commitment.

요한복음 14-17장에는 예수님의 마지막 말씀들과 기도가 들어 있읍니다.
그가 세상에서 하신 일들, 그의 부활과 승천 이후에 믿는 사람들과 세상과의 관계들에 관한
해석들이 담겨있읍니다. 15장에는 믿는 사람들의 삶- 그들과 그리스도와의 관계 그리고 믿는
사람들 사이의 사랑의 관계들에 대해 기록하고 있읍니다.
이러한 내용들은 예수님이 제자들의 발을 씻겨주신 일이 벌어진 다음에 나옵니다. 예수님은
자신과 제자들과의 관계를 종과 주인 사이의 관계라기보다는 친구의 관계로 묘사합니다.
어떤 출판사가 “친구”라는 말을 가장 잘 묘사한 사람에게 상을 주기로 했습니다. 수많은
응모가들 가운데 더러는 다음과 같이 친구에 대해 설명하기도 했읍니다.
“기쁨은 함께 증가시키고, 슬픔은 서로 나누며, 철저하게 정직한 사람”
“침묵의 의미를 잘 이해하는 사람”
“동정심이 투철한 사람”
“항상 진실하게 사는 사람”
그런데 우승한 사람의 정의는 다음과 같읍니다:
“진정한 친구란 온 세상 사람이 다 버리고 떠나갈지라도 찾아오는 사람”(자질구레한
것들,1991)
제자들은 예수님에게 붙어있는 가지로서 그에게 연결되어 있고, 제자들이 맺어야할 열매는
사랑입니다. 우리가 서로 사랑할때 예수님이 우리를 사랑하심을 경험하게됩니다. 예수님은
우리와 함께 계시면서 하나님의 사랑을 나누도록 우리를 부르십니다.
베드로가 가이사리아에 있는 로마군인 대장 고르넬리오의 집을 방문합니다. 베드로는
하나님께서 인간이 세워놓은 장벽을 초월하시는 활동을 하신다는것을 알게되었읍니다.
누구나 성령을 받으면, 이미 하나님의 교회의 일원이며, 세례를 받을 수 있는것입니다.
우리는 여기에 나오는 내용들을 이방인들을 위한 오순절이라고 부를 수 있을것입니다.
그리스도의 삶, 죽음, 부활이 성령을 통해서 이방인들에게도 연결된것입니다.

성령의 역사하심을 통해서 이방인들이 서로 다른 언어들을 이해하고 하나님을 찬양하게
되었읍니다.
예수를 따르는 사람들이 함께 모이고 뭉칠때에 교회가 일어납니다. 예수님의 희망과
가르침을 따를때에 우리는 그의 제자들이 되고 창조적으로 성실하게 반응을 하게됩니다.
예수님이 우리를 친구라고 부르실때에 우리는 하나님과 특별한 관계를 갖게됩니다.
이러한 친구관계 속에서 우리는
-잘 경청하는 일,
-담대하고 용기와 지혜롭게 대처하는 일,
-기쁜 소식을 함께 나누는 일,
-목회의 동반자들서 함께 살고 행동하는 일들을 하게됩니다.
우리는 이 연합교단에서 여러 다른 문화와 민족 배경을 가진 사람들과 함께 친구관계과
다양한 다른 관계를 가지면서 여러가지의 목회를 해 나아갑니다.
함께 찬양, 서로 용서, 인내, 감사와 고마움을 표시하며 살도록 노력하십시다.
창조성, 열정, 돌보는 마음, 적극적인 태도, 그리고 헌신을 통해서 우리에게 주어진 목회와
선교의 사명을 기쁨으로 감당하며 살아가십시다.
