Title: Witness to the Light
Scripture: Numbers 21:4-9 John 3:14-21
The Israelites are facing the untamed nature of the wilderness. It tells one of the stories of
hardship from Israel’s history. After their escape from Egypt, the Israel people wandered in
the wilderness; some became impatient and complained: accused God of infidelity; accused
Moses of poor and failed leadership.
God sent fiery serpents among them, as a symbol of purification. Healing comes when
Moses places a bronze serpent on a pole. Those who are bitten look at the bronze serpent
and live. God restores wholeness of life, the gift of new life, to those who respond in faith.
Jesus connects the story of the serpent, the image of the bronze serpent, with his own
being”lifted up” on the cross. Just as the bronze serpent brought restoration of life to those
who had been bitten in the wilderness, so belief in Jesus Christ brings new life to us.
Through Jesus, we can know God’s healing love and follow in God’s paths.
During the visit of Nicodemus to Jesus, Jesus elaborates on the new birth necessary for
seeing the kingdom of God.
He announces three themes:
a) The “lifting up” of the Son of Man.
b) The sending of the Son as a manifestation of God’s love.
c) The consequences of those actions for humankind, the new life.
The central theological message is that God loves the world.
God acts in order to save the world.
We discover our true self through love and through building one another up in the service of
God and others.
We turn to God in faith and praise. God loves and cares for us, no matter what.
Regardless of our distress, God responds in steadfast love.
Where do we see signs of God’s love ?
How can we live according to the healing message of God’s steadfast love?
Elbert Hubbard said, “The love we give away is the only love we keep.”

이스라엘 사람들은 험하고 익숙지 않은 광야생활을 할수밖에 없었읍니다. 이 상황은
그들의 역사에서 가장 힘들었던 사건중의 하나였읍니다. 애굽을 탈출한 후 그들은 광야를
헤매며 살았읍니다. 많은 사람들이 자신들은 광야에서 살수없다고 불평을 늘어놓기도
했지요. 어떤 무리는 하나님을 믿을 수없다고 대들기도 했읍니다. 또는 모세가 지도력이
부족하다고 막무가내 였던 사람들도 더러 있었읍니다.
이런 백성들에게 하나님은 뱀을 보내서 물려 죽게했지요. 그러나 하나님은 모세를 통해서
구리뱀을 만들어 들게하고서 뱀에 물렸더라도 구리뱀을 바라본 사람들은 살아남을 수 있게
하셨읍니다.
하나님은 그를 믿을뿐 아니라, 그 믿음으로 반응을 보인 사람들에게는 새로운 생명과 삶을
선물로 주셨읍니다.
예수님은 이 구약에 나오는 구리뱀의 이야기를 자신이 십자가에 달리신 사건과 연결시켜
설명하셨지요. 광야에서 뱀에게 물렸었드라도 구리뱀을 쳐다본 사람들은 생명을 다시
찾은것처럼 예수 그리스도를 믿는 사람들에게는 새로운 생명을 주셨읍니다. 하나님께서
예수 그리스도를 통해서 주시는 치유의 사랑을 우리는 알게 되고, 하나님께서 보여주시는
길을 따라갈수 있는것이지요.
예수님은 니고데모가 자신을 찾았을때, 하나님의 나라를 보는데 필요한 새로 태어나는
일에
대해 설명해주셨읍니다.
예수님은 3 가지 주제를 말씀하셨읍니다:
1) 사람의 아들이 들려야한다.
2) 하나님의 사랑을 나타내기위해 그의 아들을 이 세상에 보냈다.
3) 그런 하나님의 활동의 결과는 인간에게 새로운 삶을 주시기 위함이다.
여기에서 중심되는 신학적인 메시지는 하나님께서 이 세상을 사랑하신다는 것입니다.
하나님은 이 세상을 사랑하시며, 구하시려고 활동하시는 것입니다.
우리는 사랑을 통해서 그리고 하나님과 남을 섬기는 일을 통해서 참된 우리 자신을
발견하게됩니다.
우리는 믿음과 찬양을 통해서 하나님께 나아갑니다. 하나님께서는 우리의 상황이 어
떻하든지간에 우리를 사랑하시고 돌보아 주십니다. 우리가 아무리 괴롭고 고통스러워도
하나님은 끊임없는 사랑으로 응답해주십니다.
우리는 어디에서 하나님의 사랑의 표시 혹은 흔적을 찾아볼수 있읍니까?
하나님께서 우리를 끊임없이 사랑하신다는 메시지를 따라서 우리는 어떻게 살아갈수
있을까요?

후발드는,  “우리가 남들과  나누는 사랑이야말로 우리가 유일하게 간직할 수 있는 사랑이라”고  말했읍니다.
