성탄주일, 그가 자기 백성을 구원하실 것이다

대림절이 돌아올 때마다 우리는 이렇게 찬양합니다. “곧 오소서 임마누엘, 오 구하소서 이스라엘, 그 포로 생활 고달파, 메시야 기다립니다. 기뻐하라 이스라엘, 곧 오시리 오 임마누엘.” 구세주 주님의 오심을 기다리며 우리는 또한 이렇게 찬양합니다. “오랫동안 기다리던 주님 강림하셔서, 죄에 매인 백성들을 자유 얻게 하시네, 주는 우리 소망이요 힘과 위로 되시니, 오래 기다리던 백성 많은 복을 받겠네.”

로마황제 아우구스투스가 내전을 종식하고 로마제국에 평화를 가져왔을 때, 사람들은 그를 세상을 구원한 구세주, 평화의 왕이라고 불렀습니다. 그가 죽었을 때, 그는 하늘로 올라가서 하나님의 아들이 되었다고 사람들은 노래했습니다. 하지만 우리는 오늘 로마황제가 아니라 말구유에서 태어나신 아기 예수를 구세주, 평화의 왕, 하나님의 아들로 고백하기 위해 이 자리에 모였습니다. 로마황제가 하늘로 올라가서 하나님의 아들이 되었다면 예수님은 이 땅에 내려오셔서 하나님의 아들이 되셨습니다. 우리는 하늘로 올라간 황제를 경배하지 않고 말구유에서 태어나신 아기 예수님, 고통받은 이들과 함께 하기 위해 땅으로 내려오신 아기 예수님을 경배합니다. 하나님께서는 우리를 죄에서 구원하고, 우리를 치료하고, 이 땅에 하나님의 정의와 평화를 가져오기 위해 예수의 모습으로 이 땅에 내려오셨습니다. 이것이 복음이고 기쁜 소식입니다.

오늘 우리가 읽은 성경말씀은 하나님이 어떤 분이시고 그분의 마음과 성품이 어떠한지를 잘 보여줍니다. 우리는 종종 하나님이 무서운 분이시고, 우리의 고통에 무관심하시고, 우리의 삶에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에 계신 분이라고 오해를 합니다. 우리가 저지르는 죄가 하나님을 화나게 할 수도 있고 하나님과 우리 사이를 멀리 떨어뜨려 놓을 수도 있습니다. 우리의 이기적인 기도가 하나님과 우리 사이의 친밀한 관계를 방해할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 오늘의 성경말씀은 하나님이 무서운 분이 아니라 자비로운 분이시고, 무관심한 분이 아니라 우리를 사랑하시고, 멀리 계신 분이 아니라 우리와 가까이 계신 분이라는 것을 가르쳐 주고 있습니다.

우리는 오늘 천사들의 음성을 듣습니다. “다윗의 자손 요셉아, 두려워하지 말아라. 마리아가 아이를 낳을 것이니 너는 그 이름을 예수라고 하여라. 그가 자기 백성을 그들의 죄에서 구원하실 것이다.” 예수의 또 다른 이름은 임마누엘이고 임마누엘은 “하나님이 우리와 함께 하신다”라는 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 진실로 하나님께서는 무서운 분도 아니고, 무관심한 분도 아니고, 멀리 떨어진 분도 아닙니다. 하나님께서는 우리를 사랑하시고 우리를 구원하기 원하십니다. 하나님께서는 우리를 죄에서 구원하기 위해서 아기 예수의 모습으로 우리를 찾아오셨습니다. 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 우리를 구원하기 위해 아기 예수의 모습으로 이 땅에 내려오신 하나님을 찬양합시다. 우리는 홀로가 아닙니다. 하나님께서 언제나 우리와 함께 하십니다. 우리를 버리지 않으시고 우리를 구원하기 위해 우리를 찾아오신 주님의 은혜가 성도님들의 삶에 함께 하기를 기도합니다. 아기 예수님의 구원과 평화가 성도님들의 삶에 언제나 함께 하기를 기도합니다. 아멘.

Every time the season of Advent comes to us, we sing and praise “O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appears. Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel Shall come to Thee, O Israel!” Waiting for the coming of our Lord, Saviour, we also sing and praise, “Come, Thou long expected Jesus, Born to set Thy people free, From our fears and sins release us; Let us find our rest in Thee. Israel’s strength and consolation. Hope of all the earth Thou art; Dear desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart.” When the Roman emperor Augustus Caesar ended the civil war, and brought peace to the Roman Empire, people called him the King of Peace and Saviour. When he died, people sang that he ascended to heaven, and became the Son of God. But we are here today to confess not the Roman Emperor, but a baby Jesus born in a manger, as our King of Peace and Saviour. While the Roman emperor was believed to go to heaven to be the Son of God, we believe that Jesus descended to be the Son of God. We do not worship the emperor who ascended to heaven, but worship God in baby Jesus who was born in a manger and came down to be with the suffering. God in Jesus came down to save us from sin, heal us, and bring to the world God’s justice and peace.

The Scriptures we read today states who God is and what God’s character and heart are like. We often misunderstand God. Sometimes God looks scary, indifferent, or far away. Probably, our sins may upset God and separate us from God. Our selfish prayers may hinder an intimate relationship with God. But nevertheless, today’s Scripture teaches us that God is not scary, but merciful, not indifferent, but loving us, not far away, but close to us. Today we hear the voice of the angel says, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” We also hear that his other name is Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” Dear friends, we are here today to praise God in Jesus. We are here today to rejoice that God has come down to the earth to save us. We are here today to worship Jesus, whose name is “Emmanuel.” Indeed we are not alone. God is with us. May the love, grace, salvation and peace of Baby Jesus be with you. “You are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Amen.
