Title: Deep in our Hearts
Scripture: Jeremiah 31:31-34
John 12:20-33
God had troubles/headaches in dealing with people in the Bible.
a. Adam and Eve: hiding and trying to be away from God.
made excuses and blaming
b. Cain and Abel: there were anger, denying, hiding, and excuses
c. Jonah: hiding, resistance, and refusal
d. Israel: complaining, anger, refusal , and resistance
One day God said to Jeremiah:
“I chose you before I gave you life, and before you were born, I selected you to be a prophet
to the nations. Go to the people I send you to, and tell them everything I command you to
say. Do not be afraid of them, for I will be with you to protect you. Listen, I am giving you
authority over nations and kingdoms
to uproot and to pull down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.” (Jeremiah 1:4-10)
Jeremiah lived in the small kingdom of Judah, the southern part of divided Israel.
As a young man, he was called by God to be a prophet among the people of Judah.
Around 627 B.C he proclaimed God’s message with courage and faithfulness.
Jeremiah prophesied that the people of Judah could not win the powerful country Babylon,
because they had rejected God and turned to idolatry. The Babylonians conquered Judah
and exiled many decision-makers and leading citizens to Babylon.
However, in this moment of national disaster, Jeremiah prophesied that God will renew the
commitment that God had made to the people through Abraham and confirmed in the
Exodus. God’s willingness to renew the covenant is a willingness emerging not from
stubbornness but from the love of God. In this covenant, humankind and God will be present
together.
God’s law will no longer be an external agreement that can be broken by people’s
unfaithfulness. The new covenant will change community interaction radically. The new
covenant is a new relationship which is founded on God’s love, which moves God to forgive
and provide a new beginning and support for the people in the new relationship.

What do you think about God’s love for you and God’s unwillingness to let go of the
covenantal relationship with you?
The radical nature of God’s covenant with humanity is evident also in John 12:20-33.
Jesus gives people a word of hope by using the imagery of a seed that falls to the ground
and dies in order that it can burst up through the ground when the cold of winter is past.
Choices are required, however, God’s grace is continually offered.
In this Lenten season, we affirm God's action on our behalf. The nature of God’s covenant is
described as God’s movement within the human hearts.
St. Paul suggests in Romans 12:2 “Be transformed by the renewing of your minds”
“The transformation required of us is not simply to be like Christ, but to be a Christ”

Do we have a burning love of God deep in our hearts?
Do we keep and create human relationships through the power of caring love
deep in our hearts?

본문: 예레미야 31:31-34 요한복음 12:20-33
성서에 보면, 하나님께서 사람들을 대하시면서 골치가 아픈 일들이 많았읍니다.
가) 아담과 이브의 경우에는 하나님으로부터 도망가고 숨어버리는가 하면, 핑게대기도하고
상대방탓이라고 주장하기도 했지요.
나) 가인과 아벨의 사건에서는 하나님께 화내고, 부인하며, 숨어버리고 핑게대는 일이
있었지요.
다) 요나의 이야기에서는 그가 하나님으로부터 숨어버리고, 저항하기도하며, 맡은 일을
거절하기도 했읍니다.
어느날 하나님께서 예레미야에게,
“내가 처음부터 너를 뽑아세웠다. 네가 태어나기 전부터 너를 나의 예언자로 삼았다.
내가 너를 보내는 사람들에게 가서 내가 하라는 말을 전하여라. 그 사람들을 두려워 말라.
내가 너를 보호하겠다. 세계만방을 네 손에 맡긴다. 뽑기도 하고 무너뜨리기도 하고, 멸하기도
하고 헐어버리기도 하고, 세우기도 하고 심기도 하여라.” (1:4-10) 라고 말씀하셨읍니다.
예레미야는 유다 땅에 살았는데, 어려서부터 예언자로 하나님의 부르심을 받고, 주전
627년경에 용기를 갖고 성실하게 하나님의 말씀을 선포했읍니다. 그는 작은 유다나라가
강력한 바벨론과 대항해서 싸워서는 안된다고 주장했지요. 결국에는 이스라엘과 유다가
바벨론에게 침략을 당하고 많은 사람들이 포로로 잡혀갔지요.
예례미야는 나라가 이렇게 어려운 상황에 처해있을 때에 하나님께서 이 백성들과 맺은
계약을 새롭게 하실것이라고 예언합니다. 아브라함때부터 맺은 계약을 사랑으로 새롭게
하신다고 예언했지요.
이 새로운 계약은 유다와 이스라엘 백성이 진실하지 못해서 파기해 버리는 그런 외형적인
약속이 아니라고 했읍니다. , 하나님께서 용서하시며, 이 백성이 새로운 시작을 하도록
도우시는 하나님의 사랑에 근거한 새로운 관계입니다.
여러분과 맺으신 약속을 방치하지 않으시는 하나님의 사랑을 어떻게 생각하세요?
요한복음 12장에 보면, 인간들과 맺으시는 하나님의 계약이 어떤것임을 알려줍니다.
예수님은 씨가 땅에 떨어져서 죽으면 새로운 싹을 내게되는 비유를 통해서 우리들에게
희망의 말씀을 주십니다.

선택은 우리가 할 수 있지만, 하나님은 늘 우리에게 은혜를 제시하십니다.
이 고난계절에 우리는 하나님이 우리를 위해 하시는 활동을 믿습니다. 하나님이 우리와
맺으시는 계약은 우리의 가슴 깊이 파고듭니다.
로마서 12장에 보면, “여러분은 마음을 새롭게 하여 새 사람이 되라” 고 합니다.
새롭게 변화한다는것은 단순히 그리스도처럼 된다기 보다는 작은 그리스도가 되어야함을
강조하는 것입니다.
우리는 가슴속 깊이로부터 열렬히 하나님을 사랑합니까? 우리의 가슴속 깊이로부터 서로
돌보고 아끼는 사랑을 통해서 깊은 인간관계를 맺으며, 또 계속하려고 합니까?
